Large freshwater and saltwater wetlands, estuaries, and coastal areas across Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, and New Zealand. Highly nomadic, following water availability.
How to spot
Look for its impressive size, white body, black wingtips (visible in flight), and exceptionally long pinkish bill. Often seen floating on water or flying in V-formations.
When to spot
Year-round, but movements can be unpredictable. Easily observed during daylight hours, often in large flocks.
