Spotted
A relatively small and highly secretive bittern of South America, known for its subtle streaked plumage that provides camouflage in its marshy habitat.
Where to spot
Dense freshwater marshes, swamps, and reedbeds across South America.
How to spot
Requires extreme patience and quiet observation of dense marshy vegetation. Look for its streaky brown plumage, often perched low or walking slowly through reeds.
When to spot
Year-round. Best chance for observation is at dawn or dusk, or when it is briefly exposed while moving between patches of vegetation.
This bittern is so well camouflaged and secretive that it is often overlooked, even by experienced birdwatchers, making every sighting a special event.
