Spotted
A very large, stately white pelican of North America, characterized by its immense orange bill and black flight feathers visible only in flight. It does not plunge dive for fish.
Where to spot
Large freshwater lakes, rivers, and estuaries across inland North America, wintering on coasts of the US, Mexico, and Central America.
How to spot
Look for its large size, all-white body with black primary and secondary feathers (visible in flight), and large orange bill. Often seen floating on water or in large flocks flying in V-formations.
When to spot
Migratory in most of its range, present during breeding season (spring/summer) in northern areas, or year-round in southern wintering grounds.

Unlike Brown Pelicans, American White Pelicans typically fish cooperatively, herding fish together into a tighter group before scooping them up with their large pouches.
