Spotted by
The Eurasian Sparrowhawk is a small, agile raptor, perfectly adapted for hunting small birds in dense woodland and suburban gardens. Males are notably smaller than females, a significant size dimorphism. It is a swift and stealthy hunter.
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe and Asia. Look for them in woodlands, forests, parks, and even large gardens, often near bird feeders where their prey congregates. They are highly adaptable to various environments.
How to spot
Identify by its relatively short, broad, rounded wings and long tail, which give it exceptional maneuverability in tight spaces. Males have slate-grey backs and reddish-barred underparts; females are larger and browner with grey barring. Watch for its characteristic dash-and-grab hunting style.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in much of its range, as many populations are resident. Migratory populations are seen passing through during spring (March-April) and autumn (September-November). Most active during the day.

The large size difference between male and female Eurasian Sparrowhawks allows them to hunt a wider range of prey species, reducing competition for food within the pair.
