The Northern Goshawk is a large, powerful raptor of northern forests across the globe. Known for its fierce hunting prowess and impressive agility within dense woodlands, it is often called the 'phantom of the forest'.
Where to spot
Widespread across temperate and boreal forests of North America, Europe, and Asia. Inhabits dense coniferous and deciduous forests, preferring mature woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its broad, rounded wings and relatively long tail. It typically flies low through the forest or hunts from a concealed perch. Listen for its rapid, loud 'kek-kek-kek' calls, especially near nests.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Most easily observed during late winter and early spring when they are more vocal or during migration. Can be elusive outside of breeding season.
Goshawks are renowned for their aggressive defense of nests, often attacking anything perceived as a threat, including humans, with formidable strikes.
