A large, striking grouse species, famous for the elaborate courtship displays performed by males during the breeding season. Males are predominantly black with a lyre-shaped tail.
Where to spot
Moorlands, boggy areas, open woodlands, and forest edges across northern Eurasia, including parts of Europe and Russia.
How to spot
Seek out open areas with scattered trees or low vegetation, especially at dawn during breeding season. Look for groups of males displaying on the ground, often in designated lekking sites.
When to spot
Year-round. The most spectacular time to observe is during spring (March-May) at dawn, when males perform their lekking displays.
