Spotted
The Rock Ptarmigan is a hardy Arctic-alpine grouse found across the Northern Hemisphere. It is renowned for its exceptional camouflage, undergoing multiple seasonal molts to match its rocky, often snowy, environment, from mottled grey-brown to pure white.
Where to spot
High alpine tundra, rocky mountain slopes, and barren arctic environments across North America, Europe (including Iceland and the Alps), and Asia.
How to spot
Trek into high-altitude, rocky, treeless terrain. Scan slopes and boulder fields. Look for movement or subtle shapes. Their calls are less conspicuous than Willow Ptarmigan, so rely more on visual searching. Patience and binoculars are essential.
When to spot
Year-round. Easier to spot in spring when males display or during molting periods when their camouflage might be less perfect. In winter, they are exceptionally difficult to see against snow.

The Rock Ptarmigan's scientific name, *Lagopus muta*, translates to "hare-footed mute," referring to its feathered feet and relatively quiet calls compared to other grouse species.
