The Greater Prairie-Chicken is a charismatic grouse species renowned for its spectacular courtship displays on communal booming grounds, or 'leks'. Males inflate vibrant orange-yellow air sacs and produce a deep, resonant 'booming' sound.
Where to spot
Found in native tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies of central North America.
How to spot
Visit known booming grounds at dawn in spring. Remain still and concealed in a blind or at a distance to avoid disturbing the birds. Listen for the unmistakable booming calls and watch for the males' elaborate dances and air sac inflation.
