Spotted
The Snow Mountain Quail is a rare and elusive small game bird endemic to the high-altitude grasslands and alpine zones of New Guinea. Its specialized habitat makes it one of the less commonly encountered quail species.
Where to spot
Found exclusively in high-altitude grasslands, alpine meadows, and subalpine scrub in the central highlands of New Guinea.
How to spot
Requires strenuous trekking to reach its remote habitat. Listen for its calls among the sparse vegetation and be prepared for sudden flushes as it bursts from cover.
When to spot
Best sought during the cooler parts of the day, like early morning, in its restricted mountain habitat. Access is usually limited to specific expedition periods.
This species is one of the few quail known to inhabit such high elevations, often found foraging above the tree line in the central mountain ranges of New Guinea.
