Spotted
The Spectacled Cormorant was an exceptionally large and flightless cormorant, tragically driven to extinction in the mid-19th century. It was native to a small number of islands in the North Pacific.
Where to spot
Historically found on Bering Island and perhaps other islands in the Komandorski and Aleutian chains (North Pacific). Sadly, no longer observable in the wild.
How to spot
No longer possible to observe in the wild. Historical accounts describe its large size, flightless nature, and the distinctive white patches around its eyes, which gave it its 'spectacled' name.
When to spot
Extinct since the mid-19th century. Historical observations would have occurred year-round in its limited island habitats.
This species was famously flightless and considerably larger than any living cormorant, making it a unique giant among its family before its extinction.
