The Socotra Cormorant is a large, dark cormorant endemic to the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. It is a highly colonial species, forming immense breeding colonies on offshore islands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden, breeding on offshore islands of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Socotra. Forages in coastal waters.
How to spot
Look for its large size and entirely dark, greenish-black plumage. During breeding, it develops a small crest and reddish-brown patches on its neck. Often seen in enormous flocks flying in V-formations or rafting on the water surface. Observe from coastal vantage points or boat trips.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its coastal range. Breeding typically occurs during the cooler months of the northern hemisphere winter.
