Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia and the Philippines. Inhabits freshwater lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for its small size, entirely black plumage (sometimes with a slight brownish tint), and slender body. Often seen swimming with its body low in the water, diving frequently, or perched on branches or rocks with wings outstretched to dry.

Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Active throughout the day, often seen fishing or sunning itself.
