Spotted
The Flightless Cormorant is a unique and critically endangered cormorant endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is the only cormorant species that has completely lost the ability to fly, a rare adaptation among birds.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Galapagos Islands, primarily found on Fernandina and Isabela islands. Inhabits rocky coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for its large size, entirely dark plumage, and noticeably stunted wings. Observe its unique terrestrial posture and its powerful, efficient diving behavior. It cannot be confused with any other bird in its habitat due to its flightlessness.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its specific Galapagos range. Breeding occurs throughout the year, with activity peaking during the cooler dry season.
Its wings are greatly reduced, only about one-third the size needed for flight, but its powerful legs and webbed feet make it an exceptional swimmer and diver.
