Spotted
The Double-crested Cormorant is a widespread and common cormorant across North America. It is characterized by its dull black plumage, orange-yellow gular pouch, and the two tufts of feathers on its head during breeding.
Where to spot
Widespread across North America, from Alaska and Canada south to Florida and Mexico. Inhabits a wide range of aquatic habitats, including freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal marine environments.
How to spot
Look for its medium to large size, dull black plumage, and orange-yellow facial skin/gular pouch. The 'double crests' are often subtle. Often seen swimming low in the water, diving, or perched with wings outstretched to dry.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in much of its range, though northern populations migrate south for winter. Active throughout the day, often seen fishing or drying its wings.

Its name comes from the two small, curly crests of feathers that appear on its head during the breeding season, although these are often difficult to see.
