Spotted
The Little Black Cormorant is a medium-sized, entirely dark cormorant found in Australasia. It is a highly social species, often seen in large feeding flocks and roosting groups.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. Inhabits both freshwater (lakes, rivers, swamps) and coastal marine environments (estuaries, sheltered bays).
How to spot
Look for its entirely black, glossy plumage and slender body. Often seen swimming low in the water, diving frequently, or perched in trees or on structures. Distinguished from other cormorants by its uniform dark color and medium size.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Active throughout the day, often fishing or drying its wings.
