Spotted
The Yellow-eyed Penguin, or Hoiho, is a rare and endangered penguin species endemic to New Zealand. It is distinguished by its pale yellow eyes and a yellow band extending from its eyes around the back of its head. This shy and solitary forest-nesting penguin faces significant conservation threats.
Where to spot
Endemic to the southeastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand, Stewart Island, and several sub-Antarctic islands (e.g., Auckland and Campbell Islands). Nests in coastal forest and scrub.
How to spot
Look for its unique pale yellow eyes and the yellow band across its head, contrasting with a dark head and slate-grey back. Be extremely quiet and maintain a significant distance as they are very shy and critically endangered. Many viewing sites offer hides or guided tours for minimal disturbance.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Best observed during the breeding season (September-March) when adults are coming ashore to feed chicks. Dawn and dusk are prime viewing times as they leave and return from foraging at sea.

Unlike most penguins that nest in large, open colonies, the Yellow-eyed Penguin is a solitary nester, preferring secluded spots in coastal forests, sometimes a considerable distance inland.
