Spotted
The Macaroni Penguin is a striking crested penguin, famous for its dense, bright orange-yellow crests that meet in the middle of its forehead. It is a highly colonial species, forming massive, noisy breeding grounds on sub-Antarctic islands. This species is an agile swimmer and diver.
Where to spot
Breeds on sub-Antarctic islands across the Southern Ocean, including South Georgia, Falkland Islands, Kerguelen, Crozet, Macquarie, and Heard Island. Forages in surrounding Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters.
How to spot
Look for its dark black back, white belly, and especially its bright orange-yellow crests that extend from a black patch on its forehead. Observe their bustling colonies, their waddling, and their powerful swimming. Listen for their loud, raucous calls.
When to spot
Present in colonies during the austral spring and summer (October-March) for breeding. Disperses at sea during the austral winter. Best observed during the breeding season at accessible colonies.

The name 'Macaroni' comes from an 18th-century fashion trend called 'macaroni', which referred to elaborate or flamboyant hairstyles and clothing, likening the penguin's crest to these styles.
