Spotted
The Snares Penguin, also known as the Snares Crested Penguin, is a medium-sized crested penguin endemic to the Snares Islands off the coast of New Zealand. It is characterized by its prominent yellow crests that hang downwards at the sides of its head, and a heavy orange-brown bill. This species is known for its loud vocalizations.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Snares Islands, a small group of sub-Antarctic islands south of New Zealand. Breeds exclusively on these islands and forages in the surrounding waters.
How to spot
Look for its dark blue-black back, white belly, orange-brown bill, and the yellow crests that originate at the base of the bill and droop downwards. Listen for its loud, trumpeting calls. Observe them navigating the rocky, vegetated slopes of their island home.
When to spot
Present in colonies during the austral spring and summer (September-February) for breeding. Disperses at sea during the austral winter. Observation opportunities are limited due to the protected status and remoteness of the Snares Islands, requiring permits.

Snares Penguins often create 'penguin highways' or tracks through the dense Snares Island vegetation, which they use to commute between their nesting sites and the sea.
