Spotted
The Erect-crested Penguin is a medium-sized crested penguin endemic to the remote sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand. It is easily recognized by its distinctive yellow crests that stand upright above its eyes. This species is known for its synchronized head-shaking displays.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Bounty and Antipodes Islands of New Zealand, with smaller numbers on Auckland and Campbell Islands. Forages in the surrounding sub-Antarctic waters.
How to spot
Look for its black and white plumage, black head, and the prominent, stiff, yellow crests that stand erect above its eyes. Observe its waddling on rocky terrain and its swimming. Due to the extreme remoteness and strict protection of their breeding grounds, observation opportunities are very rare and require special permits.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral spring and summer (September-February) when they are present in their island colonies. Access to their remote breeding grounds is very limited, primarily through specialized expeditions.
