Spotted
The Fiordland Penguin, also known as the Fiordland Crested Penguin or Tawaki, is a rare and secretive crested penguin endemic to the remote Fiordland region of New Zealand. It is characterized by its yellow crest that extends back over its eye, and its reddish-brown bill. This species is endangered and primarily nests in dense coastal forest.
Where to spot
Endemic to the southwestern coast of the South Island of New Zealand, particularly Fiordland, Stewart Island, and some offshore islets. Nests in dense coastal forest and caves.
How to spot
Look for its stout body, dark blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, and the prominent yellow crest extending from above its eye. Its reddish-brown bill is also distinctive. Be extremely quiet and patient, as they are very shy. Look near coastal forests and rocky shorelines.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Breeding occurs from July to December, with peak activity in spring and early summer. Best observed at dawn or dusk when they come ashore or depart for sea. Guided tours or specific viewing points are recommended.
