Spotted
The White-quilled Rock-Pigeon is a distinctive pigeon native to the rocky landscapes of Australia's Top End, easily recognized by the prominent white patches on its wings. It is a highly specialized species, thriving in its rugged, remote habitat.
Where to spot
Found in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and parts of the Northern Territory, inhabiting sandstone gorges, rocky escarpments, and areas with dense vegetation near water sources.
How to spot
The most prominent identifying feature is the large white patch on the outer wing feathers, visible both at rest and especially in flight. Look for it foraging on the ground among rocks or perched on ledges. Listen for its soft cooing call.
When to spot
Best observed in the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active, foraging on the ground or coming to drink. They may retreat into rocky shelters during the midday heat.

These rock-pigeons possess incredible camouflage, blending seamlessly with the dark sandstone rocks. However, the flash of their white wing patches upon takeoff makes them momentarily conspicuous.
