Spotted
The Laughing Dove is a widespread and common dove known for its distinctive, often described as 'laughing' call. This small, slender dove is highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of open and semi-open habitats across its vast range.
Where to spot
Found across a broad range including much of Africa (especially Sub-Saharan Africa), the Middle East, and parts of Asia (from Turkey to India). It favors dry open country, scrubland, farmlands, and urban areas.
How to spot
Identify by its small size, rufous-pink underparts, blue-grey wing patches, and a distinctive chequered black and white neck patch. Listen for its characteristic 'coo-coo-coo-krrrrroooo' call which rises and falls in pitch.
When to spot
Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly mornings and late afternoons, when they forage on the ground or perch conspicuously.

Its common name comes from its characteristic, trilling call that starts with a soft coo and often ends in a series of rapidly repeated notes, creating a sound reminiscent of soft laughter.
