Spotted
The Sao Tome Olive Pigeon is an endemic and endangered large pigeon found only on the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea. It inhabits the island's native forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of São Tomé, primarily in the primary and secondary montane forests.
How to spot
Look for a large, dark olive-brown pigeon, similar in general appearance to other olive pigeons but unique to São Tomé. Observe it feeding on fruits in the forest canopy or flying between trees, often with rapid, powerful wingbeats.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Observation can be challenging due to its arboreal nature and dense forest habitat.

This pigeon's survival is intimately linked to the preservation of São Tomé's dwindling primary forests, making it an important flagship species for conservation efforts on the island.
