Spotted
A large, dark forest pigeon native to the temperate rainforests of South America, the Chilean Pigeon is characterized by its dusky plumage and prominent red legs. It is the largest pigeon species in its range.
Where to spot
Southern Chile and southwestern Argentina, primarily inhabiting temperate forests, often dominated by Nothofagus (southern beech) trees. They can sometimes be seen in adjacent agricultural areas.
How to spot
Look for it perched high in the forest canopy or flying quickly and powerfully through the trees. Its deep, mournful coo, often described as 'hoo-hoo-hoo', is a good clue to its presence.
When to spot
Year-round within its range. Breeding occurs in spring and summer (Southern Hemisphere), when they may be more vocal and active.

Unlike many pigeons adapted to urban environments, the Chilean Pigeon is a true forest specialist, relying heavily on native forest fruits, particularly those from Nothofagus trees, for its diet.
