Spotted
The Mindoro Bleeding-heart is a critically endangered ground-dwelling pigeon, distinguished by a striking patch of iridescent red on its breast that resembles a 'bleeding heart'. Endemic to Mindoro in the Philippines, it is a shy and elusive bird of the forest floor.
Where to spot
Historically found in the primary and secondary lowland forests of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. Due to severe habitat loss and hunting, its remaining populations are highly fragmented.
How to spot
Observing this critically endangered species is extremely challenging. Look for it foraging quietly among leaf litter in dense forest undergrowth. Patience, silence, and familiarity with its preferred habitat are essential. Listen for soft cooing calls.
When to spot
Primarily active during the day, foraging on the forest floor. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when light is softer, within its very limited remaining habitats.

Despite its vivid 'bleeding heart' plumage, this pigeon is exceptionally difficult to spot in the wild due to its secretive nature and the dense undergrowth it inhabits.
