Spotted
The Flame-breasted Fruit Dove is a spectacular bird, named for the vivid fiery orange and red patch on its breast, contrasting with its deep green body and white cap. This rare and elusive species is endemic to the Philippines.
Where to spot
Endemic to the northern Philippines, particularly the islands of Luzon and Mindoro. Inhabits montane forests, often at higher elevations in primary growth areas.
How to spot
Due to its rarity and preference for dense montane forests, it is challenging to observe. Focus on the canopy of fruiting trees. Listen intently for its distinctive, resonant hooting calls which may be the only clue to its presence.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, particularly mornings and late afternoons when foraging for fruit. It is a resident species, present year-round.
Its incredibly bright and fiery breast plumage makes it one of the most visually stunning and sought-after species among all fruit doves, often described as resembling a burning ember.
