Ranges across New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and parts of the Solomon Islands, inhabiting lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Look for this bird foraging on the forest floor, often near streams or damp areas. It can be quite secretive, so patience and quiet movement are beneficial. Listen for its characteristic soft, mournful cooing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, often more vocal and active during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging.
