The Vaux's Swift is a small, migratory swift known for its highly acrobatic flight. It is often seen in large, swirling flocks, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Where to spot
Primarily Western North America, from Alaska south through the Pacific Northwest and California, extending into Central America during winter.
How to spot
Look for fast-flying, dark, cigar-shaped birds with rapid wingbeats. Observe them swirling over chimneys, old-growth forests, or large structures where they might roost.
When to spot
During the breeding season (spring to late summer) in temperate regions, and year-round in their tropical wintering grounds. Best observed at dawn and dusk.
