Spotted
The Andean Swift (Aeronautes montivagus) is a dynamic swift species native to the Andes Mountains of South America. It is characterized by its aerial agility and preference for high-altitude environments. This swift is typically dark with some white markings, well-adapted to life in mountainous terrain.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in the Andes mountain range, from Venezuela south to Bolivia, often soaring over high elevations, mountain valleys, and cloud forests. They nest on cliffs and rock faces.
How to spot
Look for a dark swift with a relatively short, stiffly forked tail and variable white markings, sometimes on the throat or flanks, though these can be less extensive than in other Aeronautes species. Observe its swift, powerful flight, often in flocks, using updrafts along mountain slopes. Their calls are typically high-pitched and chirping.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in resident populations within its Andean range. Most active during daylight hours, often seen in small to large flocks, especially when foraging above valleys or ridges.

Andean Swifts thrive in the thin air of high elevations, a testament to their exceptional physiological adaptations for flight and foraging in challenging mountainous landscapes.
