Spotted
The Glossy Swiftlet is one of the most widespread and common swiftlet species across Southeast Asia and Oceania. Known for its small size, glossy dark plumage, and exceptional aerial agility, it spends almost its entire life in flight.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across Southeast Asia, Melanesia, and parts of Australia, inhabiting forests, coastal areas, plantations, and urban landscapes.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic swift, direct flight, often in groups. It has glossy dark blue-black upperparts and a white belly, though some subspecies may have entirely dark underparts. Its small size is also a key identification feature.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active throughout the day. It is particularly noticeable at dawn and dusk when groups are moving to and from roosting sites.
