The Pygmy Swiftlet is among the smallest swiftlet species, known for its remarkably agile flight. It is native to Southeast Asia, where it skillfully navigates dense forests and open areas in search of insects.
Where to spot
Primarily found in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines. Inhabits lowland and montane forests, coastal areas, and often seen near human settlements and cave systems.
How to spot
Look for its exceptionally small size and rapid, erratic flight patterns. It often flies high in the canopy or over open areas. Listen for its high-pitched chirps around cave entrances.
When to spot
Year-round resident, most active during daylight hours, particularly at dawn and dusk when entering and exiting roosts.
This tiny swiftlet uses echolocation, emitting high-pitched clicks, to navigate and roost in the complete darkness of caves.
