Spotted
The Atiu Swiftlet is a small, critically endangered swiftlet species endemic to the island of Atiu in the Cook Islands. It is a highly specialized bird, uniquely adapted to its karstic island environment.
Where to spot
Endemic solely to Atiu Island in the Cook Islands. It can be observed flying over the island's forested interior and coastal areas, but its primary habitat is the extensive limestone cave system.
How to spot
The most reliable way to observe this rare swiftlet is near the entrances of the major cave systems on Atiu, where they gather at dawn and dusk. Their rapid flight and unique habitat are key identifiers.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly noticeable when they are entering or exiting the cave systems. Present year-round on Atiu.
This swiftlet is unique for nesting and roosting deep within the extensive cave systems of Atiu, even entering sinkholes and lava tubes, relying entirely on echolocation in these pitch-black environments.
