Stejneger's Petrel is a medium-sized gadfly petrel that breeds in the Juan Fernandez Islands, Chile, and migrates to the North Pacific. It is a long-distance migratory species.
Where to spot
Breeds on Masafuera (Alejandro Selkirk) Island in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago, Chile. Migrates to the central North Pacific, foraging extensively from Hawaii to Japan and the Aleutians.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and a prominent dark underwing bar. Its flight is strong, swift, and often arcing. Best observed on pelagic trips off Chile (winter) or in the central North Pacific (summer).
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (November-May). Most commonly observed in the North Pacific during the northern summer (May-October) and off Chile during the austral winter.
