Spotted
The Cape Verde Shearwater is a medium-sized shearwater endemic to the Cape Verde Islands, known for its distinctive calls and powerful flight.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Forages in the surrounding eastern North Atlantic waters, including off West Africa.
How to spot
Look for its dark brown upperparts, white underparts, and dark underwing. Similar to Cory's Shearwater but generally smaller with a darker bill. Its flight is strong and direct. Best observed on pelagic trips in the Cape Verde region.
When to spot
Breeding season is primarily from January to July. Can be observed on pelagic trips around the Cape Verde Islands during this period.
This species is particularly well-known for its nocturnal calls at its breeding colonies, which are loud and varied, creating an atmospheric soundscape.
