The Phoenix Petrel is a dark-capped gadfly petrel with a distinctive white belly, found in the central tropical Pacific. It is a highly pelagic and agile flyer.
Where to spot
Widespread across the central tropical Pacific Ocean, breeding on remote islands and atolls such as the Phoenix Islands, Line Islands, and parts of French Polynesia.
How to spot
Look for its dark cap, dark grey upperparts, bright white underparts, and a prominent dark band on the underwing. Its flight is typically arcing and fast. Best observed on pelagic trips in the central tropical Pacific.
When to spot
Breeding seasons vary by colony location, generally occurring year-round in tropical regions. Can be observed at sea throughout the year within its extensive oceanic distribution.
