Hutton's Shearwater is an endangered medium-sized shearwater endemic to New Zealand's South Island, uniquely nesting in alpine environments before heading to sea.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively in the Seaward Kaikoura Range on the South Island of New Zealand. Forages in the Tasman Sea and off southeastern Australia.
How to spot
Look for its dark upperparts, white underparts, and dark underwing with a diffuse diagonal bar. Its flight is strong and direct, with purposeful wingbeats. Best observed during pelagic trips off Kaikoura, New Zealand, especially at dawn or dusk when birds are commuting to/from colonies.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from September to April. Can be observed at sea off Kaikoura, New Zealand, during these months, particularly during pelagic tours. Nocturnal at colonies.

This species is the only seabird in the world known to breed in alpine environments, nesting in burrows at altitudes of over 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) in the Kaikoura Ranges.
