Spotted
The Snow Petrel is an iconic Antarctic seabird, entirely pure white with black eyes and bill, making it one of the most beautiful and easily recognizable birds of the polar regions.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in the waters of the Antarctic and adjacent pack ice. Breeds on cliffs and rocky outcrops along the Antarctic continent and nearby islands.
How to spot
Instantly recognizable by its entirely pure white plumage, small black eyes, and black bill. Its flight is swift and graceful. Often seen flying low over ice or resting on icebergs. Best observed during Antarctic cruises and expeditions.
When to spot
Predominantly observed during the austral summer (November-March) when the sea ice recedes, allowing access to its high-latitude habitats. Some remain year-round near ice edges.

This remarkable petrel breeds further south than any other bird species, nesting on ice-free cliffs deep within the Antarctic continent, sometimes over 300 km from the coast.
