Spotted
Salvin's Prion is a medium-sized prion with blue-grey plumage and a distinctive 'W' pattern on its upperwing. It is primarily found in the Southern Ocean.
Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding mainly on the Crozet Islands and Prince Edward Islands. Disperses widely across the cool temperate and sub-Antarctic waters, especially in the Indian Ocean sector.
How to spot
Look for its blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, and clear black 'W' or 'M' pattern across its upperwing. Distinguish from other prions by subtle bill size differences (intermediate between Broad-billed and Antarctic). Its flight is fast and erratic. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (September-April). Can be observed at sea year-round throughout its vast oceanic distribution.
