Spotted
Savile's Bustard is a small bustard species found across the Sahel belt of Africa. Its mottled plumage helps it blend into the dry, grassy plains where it forages for insects.
Where to spot
Distributed across the Sahel region of Africa, from Mauritania to Sudan, preferring dry grasslands, savannas, and shrublands.
How to spot
These ground-dwelling birds are often elusive. Drive or walk slowly through suitable habitats, constantly scanning the ground. Binoculars are highly recommended to pick out their camouflaged forms.
When to spot
Active during the early morning and late afternoon. Observation can be productive during the breeding season (often tied to rainy seasons) when males are more vocal and visible.
During their courtship display, male Savile's Bustards perform a complex dance, often involving a 'puffing' of their throat feathers and a series of deep calls.
