Hartlaub's Bustard is a medium-sized bustard found in East Africa, often in more open and drier savannas than some of its relatives. It is characterized by its somewhat stocky build and subtle plumage.
Where to spot
Endemic to East Africa, particularly Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, inhabiting open grasslands, savannas, and sometimes cultivated areas.
How to spot
Search open, short-grass plains. Due to their excellent camouflage, they can be difficult to spot, often only visible when they move. Listening for their characteristic calls, a series of croaks or grunts, can aid in detection.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging. Breeding activity, often following the rainy season, provides good opportunities for observing courtship displays.
