Spotted
The Somali Bustard is a shy and largely terrestrial bird native to the Horn of Africa. Its subtle grey-brown plumage provides excellent camouflage in its arid savanna and shrubland habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia and eastern Ethiopia, found in dry grasslands, thorny scrub, and semi-desert areas.
How to spot
Due to their shyness and camouflage, patient scanning of open plains and shrublands is essential. Using a vehicle for observation can reduce disturbance and improve chances of a sighting. Look for slow, deliberate movements on the ground.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk. Observation is more challenging during the hottest parts of the day when they seek shade.
Like many bustards, the Somali Bustard is known for its cautious nature, often freezing or slowly walking away to avoid detection rather than taking flight.
