Spotted
The Southern Black Bustard is a small, striking bustard native to southern Africa, known for the male's conspicuous black plumage. They are ground-dwelling birds of open grasslands and fynbos.
Where to spot
Endemic to southern Africa, primarily South Africa, found in open grasslands, karoo shrublands, and fynbos habitats.
How to spot
Scan open fields and plains, especially those with short grass. While camouflaged on the ground, the male's black plumage makes it distinctive when standing upright or during its display flight. Listen for the wing beat sounds during their aerial displays.
When to spot
Best seen during the breeding season (typically spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere) when males are more active with their display flights. Generally active throughout the day.

Males of this species engage in a dramatic aerial display during courtship, flying up into the air and then plummeting down with noisy wing beats to attract females.
