Spotted
The Karoo Bustard, also known as Karoo Korhaan, is a medium-sized bustard endemic to the arid Karoo regions of southern Africa. It is exceptionally well-camouflaged, blending seamlessly with its stony and sparsely vegetated shrubland habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the semi-desert and arid Karoo regions of South Africa and Namibia. It is typically found in stony plains, sparse shrublands, and open veld, often utilizing areas with low, scattered bushes.
How to spot
Observing this species requires dedicated searching in its specific habitat. Drive slowly or walk patiently through the Karoo landscape, scanning carefully. Their camouflage is so effective that patience and high-quality optics are vital. They often freeze or run rather than fly when disturbed.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, especially early morning and late afternoon, when it forages. It can be elusive during hot midday hours.
The Karoo Bustard is renowned for its incredible ability to blend into its arid, stony environment. Its plumage acts as perfect camouflage, making it one of the most challenging bustards to spot even when it's nearby.
