Spotted
The Nubian Bustard is a striking medium-sized bustard of North Africa and the Sahel, easily identified by its contrasting black and white head patterns. It thrives in arid and semi-arid grasslands and deserts.
Where to spot
Found across the Sahel region of Africa, from Mauritania to Sudan and Eritrea. It inhabits dry grasslands, steppes, and semi-deserts with scattered acacia trees and sparse vegetation.
How to spot
Scan vast, open arid plains and sparse shrublands. While their distinct head pattern can aid in identification, their overall cryptic plumage allows them to blend in remarkably well. They are often solitary or observed in pairs.
When to spot
A year-round resident within its range. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, typically early morning or late afternoon. Breeding generally occurs during the local rainy season.
During courtship, the male Nubian Bustard performs a visual display where it puffs up its white neck feathers and erects its tail, creating a highly visible and striking silhouette against the stark desert backdrop.
