Grasslands, steppes, and agricultural areas, particularly cereal fields, across Southern Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia.
How to spot
They are extremely wary and well-camouflaged in their habitat. Listen for the male's distinctive snorting call. Observation often requires patience and good optics, scanning open fields from a distance.

Year-round in resident areas, but best observed during spring/early summer in breeding grounds. Most active at dawn and dusk.
