Spotted
The White-bellied Go-away-bird is a distinctive turaco species of East Africa, easily identified by its contrasting white belly and grey upperparts. It is a common resident of savannas and dry woodlands.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, ranging from South Sudan and Ethiopia through Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, preferring dry acacia savannas and open woodlands.
How to spot
Scan acacia trees and thorny bushes. Listen for its loud, nasal calls. The contrasting white belly and grey plumage are key identification features, especially when seen perching or in flight. They often perch conspicuously at the tops of trees.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly during cooler morning and late afternoon hours. They are resident birds, observable year-round.
Like other go-away-birds, this species is known for its ability to run quickly through tree branches using its unique foot structure, which allows two toes to point forward and two backward.
