The Guinea Turaco is a widely distributed and beautiful arboreal bird, characterized by its vibrant green plumage, bright red primary flight feathers (visible in flight), and a distinctive red eye-ring. It has a rounded green crest.
Where to spot
Widespread across West and Central Africa, from Senegal east to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Found in diverse forest habitats, including gallery forests, woodlands, and secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for their loud, raucous 'kow-kow-kow' calls, which often precede a sighting. Look for them moving deliberately through the tree canopy, and watch for the flash of red in their wings as they glide between trees.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours, often most vocal during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon.
