Spotted
The Pink-spotted Fruit Dove is a beautiful and somewhat cryptic fruit dove named for the small, pearly pink spots scattered across its green wings. It is a common and widespread resident of New Guinea's forests.
Where to spot
Widespread across New Guinea and some surrounding islands, including the Bismarck Archipelago and parts of the Solomon Islands. It is found in a variety of forest types, from lowland rainforests to montane forests.
How to spot
Scan the middle and upper canopy of fruiting trees. Look for its relatively stocky build and the subtle pink spots on its wings. Listen for its low, soft cooing call, which can be difficult to pinpoint in dense foliage.
When to spot
Observable year-round within its range. Best observed early morning or late afternoon when actively feeding. They can be more vocal during the breeding season.

The unique pink spots on its wings are actually the exposed tips of specialized feathers, giving it a delicate, speckled appearance that helps it camouflage amidst the dappled sunlight filtering through the forest canopy.
