Spotted
The Geelvink Imperial-Pigeon is a large, arboreal pigeon species endemic to a small group of islands in the Geelvink Bay off New Guinea. It is a striking bird, often appearing dark with iridescent hues.
Where to spot
Restricted to the Biak, Numfor, and Yapen islands in Geelvink Bay (Cenderawasih Bay), West Papua, Indonesia, primarily inhabiting dense tropical forests.
How to spot
Look for its robust size and dark appearance within the upper canopy of primary and secondary forests. Listen for its deep, resonant cooing call, which can be heard from a distance.
When to spot
Active year-round within its limited range. Best times for observation are generally early mornings and late afternoons when the birds are actively foraging for fruit.
Named after Geelvink Bay (now Cenderawasih Bay), this pigeon is a superb flyer, capable of crossing significant stretches of open water between its island habitats to find food sources.
