Spotted
The Rufous-backed Quail-Dove is an elusive and vibrantly colored ground-dove found in the humid forests of western South America. Its rich rufous back and iridescent plumage make it a visually distinct species.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests in western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, typically between 300 to 1,200 meters elevation.
How to spot
Search the forest floor near dense undergrowth or along forest trails. Patience is crucial for this very shy bird. Listen for its deep, resonant 'whooo-whooo' or 'whu-whoo' call, which can carry through the forest.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon when it is most active and vocal.

Often considered one of the most challenging quail-doves to spot, its extreme shyness and preference for dense undergrowth make sightings rare even in its known range.
